Back To School

Back To School Safety Tips
(A Message From MTC Lost Property Office)
The recent wave of insecurity in Cameroon has caused the government, law enforcement officials, civil society organizations and many other stake holders to become more vigilant. As hunters (Boko Haram) have learnt to shoot without missing, birds (the citizens) have learnt to fly without perching. It is this background that has necessitated the development of different safety measures especially as our kids go back to school. Common Sense is one of those precautionary measures that will help you ensure your child’s safety. Ask yourself these questions:
ü  How was your child dressed when he left the house?
ü  Does your child know your name?
ü  Does your child know your phone number?
ü  Does he or she know the exact location of the house in the neighborhood?
Ø  Putting these details at the back of your child’s exercise book would help any man or woman of good will to help identify your child in case of lost.
Ø  It is advisable for school officials to search and check the bags of strangers even pupils, students and teachers. Explosives can be hidden in dust bins, so they should be constantly checked and emptied. Most importantly, our kids should be strongly advised against running errands for people they do not know.
The beginning of the school year is probably a bit of relief for you as a parent. While your kids take the summer off to roam freely with their friends, you’re stuck at work without much say in how they spend their time while you’re away. However, while school is in session, you can rest a little easier knowing that your children are in the hands of trained professionals who might actually be teaching a thing or two.
Clearly this is a preferred situation for you as a parent, but it’s also important to note that your children should be taking certain safety precautions during the school year as well. So what exactly should you be talking to your kids about this year? While this may vary depending on your child, their school, and /or your neighborhood, we’ve provided a few staple safety tips you can use to keep your kids safe during class breaks and before and after school. Check them out, then pick a time to sit down your kids for a casual conversation regarding back to school safety.
1.       Travel safely to school: Whether your child walks, bikes, carpools, or takes the bus to school, it’s important that they do so with caution. Reminding your child to travel with groups of friends when possible is important. You may also want to arrange for a responsible adult to walk your child to school and /or the bus. Remind your child to stay on the sidewalk and look both ways, making sure all drivers have seen them and stopped, before crossing the street. Reiterating the importance of avoiding strangers and leaving with plenty of time to catch the bus and/or arrive at school on time is also a good idea.
2.       Play safe: Schools are required to enlist the help of hall monitors and recess aids to ensure the safety of students during class breaks and lunch periods. While these individuals are there to watch over your child as they engage with other children, it will still be important for you to discuss the importance of playing safely. Remind your child that playground rules are set to keep them safe. Make sure they’re mindful of age restrictions and proper uses for playground equipment. Further addressing the importance of taking turns on equipment such as slides and swings will also be necessary. Ultimately, making sure that they understand the value in being mindful of the rules set by their school is the most important thing here.
3.       Stop bullying: Bullying is a growing problem in today’s schools. While organizations are working within educational institutions to eliminate the problem all together, it is ever present and increasing among children of all ages. This means it’s important to not only look for warning signs of your child being bullied, but also talk to your child about what bullying means and how it can affect others. Encourage open dialogue about bullying, and empower your children to stand up for themselves and/or others by reporting cases of bullying to school officials ASAP. One way you can check the effectiveness of your approach is to monitor your child’s social media behavior, try not to be overbearing, but look for hints of bullying either from them or others and address issues as necessary.
4.       Go home first: Your child may be tempted to stop by a friend’s house or say hi to a neighbour before heading home, but requesting that they stop by the house first allows them to more easily check in with you and leave their belongings at the house before heading out. This also gives you the opportunity to find out where they’re going and how long they’ll be there before they leave. Ask your child to head straight home from school then cal to check in before they make plans for the rest of the afternoon.
5.       Keep the house safe: It’s easy to forget to lock a door or leave a window open after you’ve come home from a long day. Be sure that your kids understand the importance of locking doors and windows every time they return home from school. Ask them to check that they haven’t left keys in the door and have locked the necessary gates and windows. Provide emergency phone numbers and be sure to have a landline or cell phone available for them to call out.

Now that you’ve got a few tips to share with your child, brainstorm to identify any other tips unique to your child and home environment. As mentioned earlier, keep your discussion casual, but also de sure that each point is conveyed clearly and comprehended. Checking in on a regular basis to talk about how things are going at school, with friends, and with siblings is also a great way to make sure your child is staying safe this school year.

Lost is a human problem. The question of lost, misplacement or forgetting of articles is a sad experience that lasts for long. The whole notion of forgetting or misplacing something has been mankind’s greatest problem ever since the building of pyramids. Everyday, millions of objects are misplaced or forgotten, ranging from keys, passports, identity cards, professional cards, rings, ear-rings, theatre tickets, scissors, cellular phones, sweaters, eye glasses, certificates, bags, wallets and the list is long. Recently, a child, a married woman and a mad man have been reported missing in the city of Yaoundé. Many of these objects and persons are never recovered. And when this happens, an ordinary day can become a nightmare. But the incredible fact is that each one of these lost objects and even persons could have been found quickly, using the amazing method now developed by MTC. And we are sure, as we are convinced, that the victim(s) will be delighted and amazed by this remarkable strategy for locating whatever you lose. A solution at last! MTC intends to come with ways and means to enable such victim(s) recover their lost articles and lost ones with ease. Declassified items or articles that have stayed for long shall be given to other non-profit making organizations to be distributed to the poor and needy. We are equally aware of the fact that all plasticized documents are non-biodegradable as they cannot be recylced by the forces of nature. For this reason, we devote our time in the recovery of these items, not just because we want to unite them with the lawful owners, but to safe the environment from degradation.

Announcement
Dear User,
Small Changes to Our Services

Since the inception of Lost & Found Items - Cameroon since 1999 and the site (www.lostandfounddocuments.blogspot.com), we have been offering a free service to re-unite people and their lost and found Items. To us, the Lost and Found Service has been a passionate demonstration of the humane feeling we share with the public. All the information about the item and finder/seeker contacts details were in the public and displayed at our main office for all to see. Unfortunately, many other unreliable individuals have taken up our idea and purport  to offer similar services. Some of them are even riding on our free platform by accessing our listings, taking it as their own, and charging on the service. Worst still, some even use the names and contact numbers of victims of lost items to request for free credit as a condition for releasing their found items. From 5th September 2015, we have put measures to ensure that this happens to a minimum by introducing the following;
1.      Small edits will be made on all items posted to conceal user contacts before they can appear on our site.
2.      We will charge a small fee to anyone who wants to gain access to the above concealed information.
1.      Those seeking their Items will bear the charge if their contact details are to appear on site.
2.      Contact details of those posting found items will remain concealed and will only be divulged to the owner upon payment.
3.      Seekers have an option of maintaining their listing at the top of search pages by making them premium. Contact the numbers below for details.
4.      All ads seeking or reporting a missing person are free. However, victims of lost items (those under the custody of MTC Lost Property Office) are expected to pay a Consultation Fee of at least 5.00Fcfa and a Retrieval Fee which is 20% the cost of the item. For example, an ID Card in Cameroon which costs about 6.000Fcfa to make would cost you 1.200Fcfa to withdraw. Both Consultation and Retrieval Fees can either be paid by reporting in person at MTC Head Office or through MTN and Orange Money Transfer using the following numbers: 677534247 or 699209877
5.      Finally, All money should be sent to the following numbers onlyas our authorised employees to assist in this regards.
MTN Money - 677534247 (This number is active for both voice calls and SMS)
